Annie did not have the heart to tell their son what really happened to Finnick. Instead of explaining his death just yet, she formulated a tale that Finnick had been casted away at sea on a long and brave journey trying to make his way back to his family on a specific date every year. So every year on the anniversary of his death, they go to the shorelines, where she tells her son to look out for a ship donned with tridents and netting. Annie knows the ship will never come, yet their son still anticipates it. And when they exhaust the waiting limits, she gently says, “Maybe next year.” Walking away with the sounds of the sea in her ears and a heavy heart.
